Screenwriting Education and Screenwriter Resources

This year's contest is notable for several reasons. We had the largest number of individual screenwriters submit their work — 52. We received the largest number of submissions ever — 133. The scoring of entries was incredibly close. For example, there were 29 entries in the Mini-Movie category that scored 80 or higher. This is a clear indication that the quality of the submitted scripts is by far the best to date.

As you might imagine, it's a formidable task to read every script and still maintain one's objectivity. For this reason, I only read 3-4 at a time, so it takes longer than I would like, but every entry deserves proper consideration and a fair assessment. Each judge submits their scores and comments on each entry and scores are averaged. The highest scores are declared winners.

For the first time and to my personal amazement, two writers had scores high enough to win in both the Mini-Movie and Short Subject categories.

AND THE WINNER IS ...

MINI-MOVIE
1"Just One Dance" by Sally Meyer
2"Becan of Beaversdam" by Charlie Hebert
3"Broken" by Chris Messineo

SHORT SUBJECT
1"Birds of a Feather" by Art Mayer
2"Believing Isabelle" by Sally Meyer
3"A Toaster in Space" by Chris Messineo

CONGRATULATIONS! to the winners of the 2008 Mini-Movie Contest.

A special "THANK YOU!" to every writer who submitted their work. Without a doubt, writers whose work we have previously seen are improving. Keep writing and submitting your work. You could be next year's winner.

Our screenwriting website is all about screenwriting education, screenplay articles, writing resources, screenwriter forums, movie script advice and contests for writers. You'll also find screenwriting software, script writing books and other information no matter what genre you write in: comedy, drama, action, horror, thriller or sci-fi. If you're looking to improve your scenes, characters, dialogue or try out ideas, we hope we can help. Whether your interest is in filmmaking or writing spec scripts for feature film or a teleplay for television, try us for ideas and suggestions. Our advice is free.

Nose around the site. There are extensive articles, exercises and plenty of free advice from the Head Nurse to established professional screenwriters. There are resources to aid in research. I've collected together links and other information for years and it's here for you to use.

I urge you to read the articles section. There's some VERY good advice here. Don't overlook the Improving Your Script section with its nutty, but effective, exercises.

Participation is the key to success here. Read the forums. Ask questions. Enter the annual Mini-Movie Contest and see if you can write a story in only 3-5 pages. Hint: it's not as easy as you think.

If I can do anything to help, call on me.

Movie Outline 3.0.5

It's been some time since we took a close look at this unique approach to screenwriting. The latest version just continues to improve in every area and some new features are especially nice.

Movie Outline 3.0 is an innovative Screenplay Outlining Application for both the new and professional screenwriter. It is completely focused on the storytelling process, not the script formatting process. The user interface is neat, clean and easy to understand and use.

Its work areas are organized into ten main views to gather the key information needed to create your story: Outline is where you create characters and outline the story, Characters helps you create believable characters that you can track throughout the story, Structure lets you divide the story into sections, Screenplay auto-formats your script as you type, Organize provides a visual view of the entire story on virtual index cards, Analyze helps you to visually compare your story's structure and pacing to a dozen Hollywood blockbusters and Present handles exporting the script to several formats and printing. Windows & Mac.

Great Dialogue Software™ named as one of the "Best Software For Writers 2007" in Writers Digest Magazine.

Great Dialogue Matters!

PRO SECRET #1: The secret that all the pros know — nothing sinks a script faster than bad dialogue, and nothing gets you noticed quicker than sparkling dialogue.

PRO SECRET #2: All great dialogue writers use a series of basic techniques.

PRO SECRET #3: The best way to learn how to write great dialogue is by example.

Let's face it, no matter how good your story is, if the dialogue is stilted your movie script, book or play won't make it to first base. It's the first way a film studio or book editor will assess how well you can write. But if you have sparkling, properly constructed dialogue your story and characters will leap off the page. We all need to improve our dialogue skills, but the books and courses on how to write dialogue are full of vague generalities that are of very limited help. You can load up on the books on how to write dialogue or take courses and easily spend about $1000, or you can buy Great Dialogue for only $19.95 and have a terrific dialogue tool by your side any time you need it.
